This is basically a teaser for my upcoming restoration of a Roberts 720A stereo tape deck. This video was taken when i was performing recording and playback tests. The machine seems to work fine mechanically but needs some electrical restoration. one channel is all to easily over driven, the other seems fine, and bias current and or head alignment are out. Recording over a tape results in bleed...

In this video I overview the basic procedure of how I installed the power bus and mounted the radios in my Silverado. I did not go into great detail, as every vehicle model installation is going to be quite a bit different. The video is mainly to inspire and provide ideas on the procedure.

So instead of paying a person the money there worth.....let's just replace said person with the 4004....sad
Thanks for this, I have a TS530 and am looking for an 830, so this will be very useful.
11:43 why are there alkaline batteries hanging from your workbench? If they are even batteries, i cant see that well with the blur happening.
Very informative video. Thanks
The Japanese have culture worthy of emulation.
Always som ahole.. American selling trade secrets.. Spies are losers..
Argh, so annoyed that it says that Shockley invented the transistor. It was truly Brattain and Bardeen who did all the heavy lifting, Shockley just showed up for the PR photos. And later turned into a total racist POS to top it off. He deserves none of the credit.
I'm transistor guy 👽
I wouldn't use paper towel. People use (glossy?) paper soaked in contact cleaner.
I have a 430 with this issue, and the relays appear to be sealed!
Watching this in 2024. Fascinating. One of my dear ham friends became a silent key, and I may possibly get his 830s and 430s. What a beautiful piece of history. The one thing constant about time, is change. And I'm not always sure that I like the change. This is really neat stuff. -KF6HLN
Thanks for reupload. So much better! Just the aidio is pretty low.
Dang, I didn’t know about the ‘potential’ issue with grounding, so thanks for posting. ⚡️
Japan and Russia were known for the quality of their transistors back then, they could mass produce medium to high hfe(gain) transistors that provided very low level of noise and leakage. In Russia they were used up until the 90 because of that and because of obvious economical reasons in the USSR

seiichi denda's story about how they reflected light off the needle of a meter to get the temperature accurately enough is truly amazing! thxu for including this gem! ✨
Insane how this is one of the most indepth documentaries of transistors and semiconductors period. You would be hardpressed to find this information elsewhere.
So wonderful to see these lovely people worked so hard to build the things necessary to produce the items needed to reach their goal. Amazing people. Reminds me of other people that dreamed and designed, and became great...
The theory behind it is boring. Getting it to work is the fun part. This documentary shows the problems that occurred and the ingenious ways they overcame them.
At 1:25 I saw my 40 years old calculator with solar cell. And it is still working!
Why my 830s meter not moving when tuning?
Just purchased one. @$100 heading home to clean. May need some innard work!🤔
I still have the HP41CX. Friends were using Sharp and TI which were very good at the time, have much softer keys, but not quite programmable. The question I have is why Japan has been lagging behind in Hitech in general ? Not only behind the US but China. Lack of innovation, resources, management, geopolitics, population, the lanaguage, or investment ? In what percentage each ?
Man, no matter who created the transistor, the great ones are those who took 5 days sanding germanium until it got the proper size, as well as all those diy solutions they developed due to the lack of proper equipment. Made me feel like dumb for not foreseeing the solutions they developed before they told.
👍🏽 🇬🇧 January 2024 I can't believe how 'Heath Robinson' Japan's entry into this arena was! Awesome progress against financial & resource odds!
Thanks for re-capturing this! Saw this series a few years ago, guess I'll have to re-watch now :)
This video helped me tremendously with the tuning.. my question is why is 225 the magic number for the RF power Peak then dip the plate, it worked great just wondering why 225 seem to be the best number is there a reason thank you
Love the access under truck from bed into cab! (Instead of buying an expensive third light antenna mount, i will mount to the bed and access like you!!! )🙏🏻
An old technician told me he could look at Vacuum tubes of the same type and they all matched each other in specs, but transistors were all different even with the same numbers. This video explains why that is, Thanks!
If anyone is wondering, the mounts are still solid but the antennas are gone, lost the receiving antenna on the highway last year and the transmit antenna came off this year, separated where the plastic meets the metal at the base. Havent bothered replacing since the truck is on its last legs, good amount of rust and engine making noise with a hair shy of 300,000km on the odometer.

So if I get this right, if you have the right material the right temp and set up... And a seed crystal 😮 You can actually grow crystals😍🤔🤔 so I assume this is the method they perfected to make artificially made diamonds. So we can grow crystals and this since the 40' or so pretty cool
Hola amigo muy buen dia, preguntarte que relay utilizaste en en la tarjeta de audio los dobles si me puedes hacer el favor, te felicito por el video en hora buena 👍 XE2IXM Chihuahua México
Love your ideas here, thank you for making this! Also, I watched a video where the guy tinned that braid first before screwing the coax into the connector, and gave it a try myself. He also scraped the inner part of each of the solder-thru holes first. Tried it myself, and between that and using flux that was the easiest and prettiest rg8/pl259 connection I had ever made.

"was criticized as being a transistor salesman by Charles de Gaulle" You can't get greater praise than that.
Anything new with the reel to reel? I just got one I’m trying to fix up.
no nothing yet. I set it up on my hifi and used it for a bit to see what is wrong. Needs some caps and belts for sure, motor is noisy so needs oil, havent had the time to dig into it, had other renovations around the house taking up too much time, and lots of camping with the family, and my father in law and I got into model railroading over the pandemic. Might try and do something this winter with it while i am walled off from the cold.
عالی بود.😍😍
ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WY MY KENWOOD TS830S IS BLOWING FUSES ,,, JUST TURN RADIO ON ACROLL THE VFO AND AFTER LIKE 3 MINUTES FUES POPS #2 ISSUE NO AUDIO ASWELL WHEN I TURN ON THE KENWOOD TS830S ANY IDEA OR FIX THANKS VA3DLO
So strange that these brilliant minds couldn't think of making their hot room with one flexible plastic wall with holes through which their hands could pass, so they could manipulate the calculator in his heated chamber without getting hot themselves... Almost unbelievable. I wonder what they do for manufacturing processes in the thousands of degrees? Do they walk inside the hearth of the steel furnace and bring water to drink?

RUINED with music! WTF?!?!
Ha I just watched your reupload. Crazy this was 9 years ago. Do you own the original VHS tapes? Are you selling any copies?
Thank You so much for uploading this series. I grew up in japan and wasn't around computers in the home until the 00's back in the USA. I think like a lot of people I've grown up with technology as a mystery and a black box. Coming into consciousness with calculators and desktop computers and not thinking of the journey the technology has come, how fast, and the minutia. I started learning electronics and electrical engineering and this has be an aesthetic and educational find. I've been racking my brains trying to get transistors and the descriptions and visual aid they used really helped. Interesting it's a Foreign Ministry of Affairs video from Japan and it's targeted towards Americans. Is it?
